Insights compare your logs to common guidance for healthy, full-term babies. Patterns vary β€” your paediatrician or IBCLC always has the final word.

Most newborns settle around 8–12 feeds per 24 hours. Consistency matters more than any single day.

Why tracking these things matters

Why count feeds?
Milk supply runs on demand: frequent, effective feeds in the early weeks are what establish it. Fewer than 8 feeds in 24 hours in a newborn is worth mentioning to your midwife β€” while "too many" feeds usually just means cluster feeding, which is normal and temporary.
Why count nappies?
Nappy output is the most reliable at-home proxy for milk intake. From around day 5, at least 6 wet nappies a day suggests your baby is getting enough β€” far more reliable than how your breasts feel or how much a pump extracts.
Why track which side?
Supply is regulated per breast. Consistently favouring one side can leave the other engorged (raising the risk of blocked ducts and mastitis) and slowly downshift its production. A rough balance over a week is plenty β€” perfection isn't the goal.
Why log weight?
Babies typically lose up to ~7% of birth weight in the first days, regain it by about two weeks, and then gain steadily. Bringing a simple weight log to appointments helps your care team spot trends early instead of reacting to single readings.
When tracking stops helping
Tracking should lower anxiety, not feed it. If logging every feed is making you watch the clock instead of your baby, it's okay to step back to nappies-and-weight only β€” those two cover the essentials.
